The Super-Pave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) system, developed through the Strategic Highway Research Program (1987–1993), introduced a performance-based grading system for bitumen. Known as Performance Grade (PG) Bitumen, it is designed to perform in extreme hot and cold climates, considering environmental conditions, traffic speed, and volume.
Unlike penetration and viscosity grading, the PG system uses advanced tests to evaluate binder properties directly related to pavement performance, such as resistance to rutting, fatigue, and thermal cracking.
PG binders are selected based on the pavement’s service temperature range, ensuring suitability for specific climatic and traffic conditions. This system offers a more precise and reliable approach for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements.
